Kids want to learn. Let me repeat that. Kids want to learn. What they don’t want, is to be in school. And they especially don’t want to be in schools that function like prisons.

Kids want to learn. Yet, it feels like adults in charge are convinced otherwise. We legislate, we relegate, we discriminate…and think that the more we punish and the more we lock down, the more kids will learn. There is a belief that a disciplined environment creates scholars. But it doesn’t. Because “discipline” has become an excuse for authority. And while discipline is needed to learn beyond what is taught in schools, to excel and become masterful at anything… it is not the tool that sparks the flame of seeking in children.

Until we reframe our perspective of schooling, the so-called “problems” with “today’s youth” will not go away. We’re answering the questions all wrong…because we’re asking the wrong questions…if we’re even asking questions at all. Answers for the sake of answers, the attitude of “because I said so” was never healthy and is not a viable path forward. Let’s try something different...

...something different, without politicizing education (Over forty percent of voters in Brookfield are Unaffiliated - and while we have many different reasons, a common thread is that we are tired of the politicized fighting over everything). Without showing kids the worst of adults. Without forgetting what it is to be a kid, even if what that means today, is different from yesterday.
